A very special building was erected in the Hohenlohe industrial park on the A6 motorway: SWG Schraubenwerk Gaisbach GmbH – Devision Production built a production hall with gigantic dimensions on an area of 11,000 square metres. Measuring almost 97 by 114 metres and with a height of around 12 metres, it was built on the company's premises. Almost 1,700 m³ of wood was processed, of which 420 m³ was of the innovative building material BauBuche. This is primarily used for the two-span girders in truss design. With a span of up to 82 metres and only one central support, BauBuche demonstrates its quality. The modern hall construction is divided into approx. 20% storage areas and 70% production and logistics areas. Adjacent to this is a three-storey administration building, which accommodates offices, conference rooms and sanitary facilities. In addition, an exhibition area serves the company to show visitors the company's own products in use and thus make timber construction come experienceable. A bridge connects the administration building with the hall.
Building ensemble as a flagship and environmental message
For the roof structure of the five-nave hall, a special type of wood, specially bonded beech wood (laminated beech veneer lumber) - so-called BauBuche - was chosen. The hall is divided into a production and logistics area, an area for tools and toolmaking as well as storage areas for raw materials such as wire, etc. The entire hall is spanned by a roof with a comb-like structure, which provides a lot of daylight inside. The choice of materials, i.e. "wood" for the supporting structure and "sheet metal and metal" for the façade, is intended, on the one side, to reflect the field of activity of SWG Produktion and the areas of application of the screws for the wood and metal sector. On the other side, sustainability was a decisive aspect in the choice of the renewable building material: Through the extensive use of hardwood and softwood, the company wants to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Few supports for maximum flexibility within the hall
In order to ensure a high degree of flexibility in production over a long time, the number of supports in the hall had to be reduced to a minimum, resulting in span widths of up to 42 m. Under these conditions, the design, which provides for a filigree supporting structure, could only be carried out with the highly load-bearing BauBuche material. Other building materials such as prestressed concrete or steel would have been too bulky, too heavy and altogether too expensive. With BauBuche, it was not only possible to optimally implement the architectural design, but also to reduce the required amount of wood to a minimum in a resource-saving way. A total of about 1,800 m³ of wood have been used. This means a CO2 reduction of around 3,600 tonnes compared to a conventional construction method - based on a life cycle of 50 years. Finally, the use of local timber has the effect of local added value. SWG Produktion commissioned the Schlosser company in Jagstzell with the prefabrication, delivery and assembly of the timber construction.
